Toronto

North America's most understated grid of distinct enclaves.

introduction

Overview

Toronto is a sprawling lakefront grid where individual neighbourhoods act as self-contained micro-cities. You navigate it best on foot and streetcar rather than by car or taxi, which get trapped in dense traffic. Expect exceptional international food communities, steep lodging prices, and starkly different experiences between summer and winter.

Kensington Market status

Kensington Market is a designated National Historic Site of Canada. It remains a pedestrian-focused enclave of independent grocers and vintage storefronts.

food

Peameal bacon, regional rotis, and strip-mall perfection

Toronto's dining landscape is shaped by its immense immigrant communities rather than a single unified regional style. The city's original culinary creation is the peameal bacon sandwich: thick-cut cornmeal-crusted pork loin on a soft kaiser roll, best eaten at St. Lawrence Market. Beyond downtown, world-class regional food sits in suburban strip malls across Scarborough and Markham, where you find regional Chinese, Sri Lankan, and Caribbean cooking unmatched elsewhere in North America.

  • Scarborough eats

Take the subway and bus east to Scarborough for dim sum, Tamil kothu roti, and Syrian shawarma.

  • Tipping standards

Restaurants add no automatic service charge. Expect to tip 15% to 18% on card payment terminals.

  • Dinner hours

Kitchens close earlier than in Europe. Most mid-tier dining spots take final food orders by 22:00.

history

A short history

Originating as Tkaronto, an Indigenous meeting place along lake trade routes, the settlement was established as York in 1793 by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe, while Fort York was the garrison built to protect it. Industrial rail expansion transformed Toronto into a manufacturing hub during the 19th century. Mass post-war immigration reshaped its demographic core, turning a conservative Protestant town into a global urban center.

  2. 1834

    Incorporation as Toronto

The city drops the name York, incorporates as Toronto, and appoints William Lyon Mackenzie as its first mayor.

  3. 1904

    The Great Fire

A massive downtown fire destroys over 100 commercial buildings, prompting modern brick architectural codes.

  4. 1976

    CN Tower completion

The CN Tower opens as the world's tallest free-standing structure, marking Toronto's skyline identity.

where to stay

Where to stay

Choose your hotel based on streetcar access rather than sheer proximity to Union Station. Staying downtown near Yonge and Dundas puts you in dense retail crowds, while staying further west along Queen or King Street keeps you within walking distance of better food and quieter side streets.

transport

Getting around

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) operates subways, buses, and streetcars across a unified fare grid. Traffic congestion makes driving or taxis frustratingly slow during peak hours; the subway and streetcar networks remain your most efficient options.

UP Express runs directly to Union Station every 15 minutes. Tap credit or debit card at platform gates.

  • The Blue Night Network operates buses and streetcars along major routes from 01:30 until subways reopen at 06:00.

  • If flying regionally into island airport YTZ, take the free pedestrian tunnel or 90-second ferry directly to the city edge.

practicalities

Good to know

  • The PATH system

A 30-kilometre underground pedestrian walkway links downtown office towers and subways. It protects you from winter weather but is easy to navigate improperly.

  • Lake air temperature drops

Temperatures down by the harbourfront run several degrees cooler than inland streets due to Lake Ontario breezes.

  • Tipping standard

Tipping is expected in full-service restaurants, bars, taxis, and hair salons. Calculate tips on the pre-tax total.

  • Card-dominated economy

Cash usage is rare. Almost every street vendor, food truck, and market stall accepts contactless cards.

  • TIFF September rush

The Toronto International Film Festival dominates early September. Hotel room rates double across the city center.
