“Overall a nice hotel. Would probably select it again for my next weekend break”

Excellent location, amazing building and lovely estate -really photogenic! Staff very friendly and helpful. Sleep comfort good (mattress, pillows). Suite fine: spacious, well lit, great views outside. Basic rooms not so much. Decent value for money. Breakfast and restaurant food: lots of room for improvement there in all respects. Cars shouldn't be allowed to park at the facade of the hotel. Some renovation of the interiors would benefit the place -common spaces mostly ok, the rooms more in need, especially as regards furniture

“Good”

The location is great, rustic and calm, exactly what you’d expect from a building and site like this, which is why you book a place like this. After about 22:00 the bar stops serving anything; you can’t even order a Coca‑Cola for your room or night. The minibar only has complimentary water; anything else must be ordered at the bar, so if you’re too late you’re left thirsty for the rest of the night except for the free water. At over 300 pounds (400 €) per night I expected more service. Only the night guard was on the premises and said the register for that day was closed and he could do nothing. I suggest having the requested item served and noted at reception to be booked into the room when the register reopens the next morning—just a suggestion. The building has no A/C or industrial ventilation system in the rooms, so they can get somewhat hot. Personal preference, but a cooler room is my preference, and it’s easily obtainable at a 3× cheaper Ibis or Novotel.

“A true country house hotel, situated in picturesque grounds.”

Driving past the village cricket ground, the first sight of Dumbleton Hall signals you’ve arrived. It’s a true country house hotel with a rich, colourful past set in picturesque grounds. My room offered a wonderful view of the croquet lawn and the wooded hillside beyond. I stayed for two nights and slept soundly each night. The bathroom was spacious with excellent amenities. The public rooms are airy and comfortable, and you can easily imagine Audrey Forbes‑Hamilton and Richard DeVere having a secret tete‑a‑tete. Dumbleton Hall is expensive, as it should be, and money has clearly been invested in the building, the fixtures, and the fittings. If the weather’s good, enjoy the grounds; if not, stay indoors, open a copy of The Field or Country Life, grab a G&T, and relax. Visitors from overseas will picture this as how England used to be, and at Dumbleton Hall it still is. In the restaurant, the main courses felt a bit fussy, but the desserts were superb. Breakfast moved at a glacial pace—fine if you’re staying in the hotel all day, but inconvenient if you have business to attend to.

The hotel is stunning inside and out, with gorgeous views and well‑kept gardens surrounding a beautiful lake that’s perfect for wandering; the staff were wonderful, and there was absolutely nothing negative to mention about this magical place.

We all dined together after a friend stayed there, enjoying a very good dinner that was a bit pricey, and the environment was quiet.
