The spot at Maraika is gorgeous. I'd always passed by on hikes and the untouched beach and easy access drew me in. The facilities were flawless: the restaurant had a nice layout, the food tasted good, and the staff were very attentive. It seemed we were one of only two couples staying, as we didn't spot any other guests—expected for low season. My room was beautiful and very open to nature, as I had known beforehand. However, the management never warned us about the large number of land crabs on the property. At night they swarmed in huge numbers. We had to zip up our luggage, and there was almost no space or luggage racks to keep it off the floor. Those crabs climbed onto the bathroom vanity, the mini fridge, and even the shower. Getting up at night to pee became a frightening ordeal. We knew low season would be humid, so they did give us two fans. We also needed to close the mosquito net to keep bugs and crabs out, but inside the net it was stuffy. The only mosquito protection they offered was a tiny bottle of bug spray in the mini fridge that they charged a steep price for. No mosquito light, no citronella incense… in a dengue zone! On the second day, after we returned from the beach, a strong stench lingered around our cabana, smelling like a dump site. We mentioned it to staff at dinner, and they said someone would look into it. After dinner, a staff member followed us back to our room to inspect, complained that our room was “muy lejos” (very far), and then insisted we tip them for having to walk over and check the stinky smell. The next morning the odor returned even stronger. So it was clearly a change in wind direction, meaning our room was near a trash site that they clearly knew about. Although the food and service were good, there were major billing issues. We were charged for drinks we never had. Luckily we carefully checked the bill. When my partner wanted to tip 15%—generous given the drama—the hostess handling the transaction demanded 20%. Definitely don’t stay here. Come for a day, enjoy the food, leave after sunset. But double‑check your bill!

The beach itself is gorgeous, with easy access and very comfortable chairs and tables, and the food was decent, but the beach service was painfully slow; after two days the menu offered nothing new and felt repetitive, there was constant noise and too many boats around—while in the water you really have to watch out they don’t run into you, and the waitstaff seemed unaccustomed to tips, often delivering terrible service.

Absolutely stunning treehouse style, boho chic private beachfront getaway. The two chefs from Uruguay are AMAZING. Easily the best food we had in two weeks around Colima/Jalisco. Highly recommend this for a romantic relaxing getaway. We stayed in the family villa and surprisingly didn't have any issues with mosquitos or insects (no repellent used). The water is clear and the marine life is absolutely thriving. We watched whales, rays and fish from the sunset deck and the beach. Everything was great! The staff were super lovely and helpful
