“terrible abused and offensive”
We stayed at Southgate Motor Inn, 70 Riddiford Street, 6021 Wellington, from 3‑9 Oct 2026. We had booked a room with one queen bed and two single beds, yet we received a room with only one queen bed. When I asked the manager at reception about a change, he said it was a double‑booking mistake and that nothing could be done. I asked how four of us, including two children, could sleep on one bed; the couch was worn and unusable, and the two glass tables around it were unsafe. He told us we could leave. It was already too late to find another place, and the situation worsened. He yelled at me, snatched the room key card roughly from my hand, used offensive language, and insulted my appearance, calling me ugly, fat, and stupid. I called the police, but they did not arrive; then he said he could provide an extra single bed. When my husband arrived, his attitude changed completely. We returned to the room, tried to calm down, and found a very disgusting pillow on the bed that looked like a secretion. After we complained again, we finally left this terrible place. I have lived in New Zealand for over 25 years and stayed in many hotels, motels, and homestays; I have never experienced this kind of treatment. The way we were treated was shocking and completely unacceptable. Shame on this hotel for such poor service and hospitality. I recorded part of the incident, including some of the manager’s yelling and abusive language. He speaks Chinese, and I understand some of it. I intend to raise this with the hotel and contact local media. No customer—especially a family traveling with children—should be treated this way. This behaviour should not be tolerated, and I hope the hotel takes steps to ensure no future guests experience the same treatment. Kind regards.
