“Nice place, but too expensive for the value.”
The ryokan has an authentic Japanese onsen style and is very charming, but it’s also very expensive, and you shouldn’t expect the same level of comfort as a western spa at the same price. The onsen facilities were okay, and it was especially charming to sit in the private bath on our own terrace, though the water was extremely hot (probably around 45 °C) and we had to add cold shower water. The rooms are sparsely equipped and lack showers; only rooms with an onsen bath have an external shower. The beds are mattresses on the floor and are quite hard. There is no heating, so even in October it was quite cold inside. The food is very specific Japanese and not very kid‑friendly; we asked for a kids’ menu for breakfast both mornings, but they forgot on the second morning. The place seemed somewhat understaffed, and on the second night we were only served drinks once we were in our third course. We paid a total of 2000 $ for the stay plus 650 $ for dinner for a family of five over two days. While the place was charming, it was definitely not worth the extremely high price compared to other nice hotels in Japan.
