The view was stunning and the room was nicely sized. The reception was often unstaffed, so I couldn’t eat breakfast or dinner in the dining area and was told to take my meals in my room, where the trays weren’t collected. I got a call very early in the morning to confirm I’d come for breakfast, even though I hadn’t requested a call.

The place stays clean and the staff are cooperative, and the room is well kept with basic amenities. It’s a bit cramped, but I booked a room with a mountain view and a small balcony, so I could see the Kanchanjana range clearly. Vegetarian meals are available. The overall experience is decent, though getting to the hotel is tough—you have to climb about 50 steep stairs, which isn’t ideal for seniors or anyone with mobility issues.

I don’t see any reason to return to this property. They don’t have a card reader, so you must pay in cash or via UPI, which is unacceptable. Breakfast options are limited to just poha and alloo puri. It’s an average place that might suit a tight budget, but you shouldn’t pay a high rate for it.

Golden Retreat in Pelling delivers breathtaking, unobstructed views of Kanchenjunga—watching the mountains glow at sunrise was truly magical and the highlight of our stay.
