The couple who run the place are unbelievably kind – they even lugged my 20‑kg suitcase up the stairs without a complaint. Breakfast was simple but solid: fresh bread, salami, cheese, cereal and a homemade jam that was surprisingly good. They were quick to bring me hot water when I asked and made an effort to chat even though my English is limited. The only hiccup was finding the entrance; it’s on the first floor and the sign can be easy to miss, but the intercom works fine once you locate it.

Muna and Lucien greeted us with a smile and spoke French fluently, which was a huge help. The house itself is quirky and nicely decorated, giving it a lot of character. The downside is the number of steps you have to climb – it can get tiring.
