The experience was incredible, close to Buddhist tradition, in a luxurious setting. The rooms were tastefully made, and the Sento as well. The food was a real taste adventure, which we personally didn’t enjoy too much. It would have been nice to have a more community vibe with the monks and other guests, and a clearer introduction to the rituals, prayers, cuisine, etc.

“Serene temple stay in Koyasan”

We arrived just in time for the temple tour that starts at 12.30 and really enjoyed learning about the temple’s history and taking part in the fire ceremony at 1pm. I’d recommend arriving for this and giving yourself enough time to also see the nearby temples. The location is very close to the cemetery entrance, so we could walk after dinner (which is at 5.30) and then again in the morning for the food ceremony. The staff were wonderfully kind and helpful, gave us recommendations, and explained bathing since it was our first onsen experience. Dinner was delicious, vegetarian, and felt like a very transitional experience. The room was beautiful and the futon comfortable, although the walls are very thin so we appreciated the 10pm bedtime so everyone could sleep without being disturbed. The baths are only open at certain times, so they can get busy; factor that into your schedule.

The experience is very beautiful and the place is interesting. The fire ritual seemed the most lovely. The staff is super friendly and nice; a receptionist speaks Spanish perfectly. The food didn’t suit me, but I’m not vegan and not used to that type of food, so I think it will be perfect for those who are and are accustomed.
