We strongly advise avoiding this place at all costs. Jason was the only staff member my friend and I saw during the first two days at the Macaw Guest House. He gave us the lockbox codes, the Wi‑Fi password, and showed us to our room. He talked about the metro, asked for my number “for any help we need around the Macaw house and any recommendations,” which I accepted because he made it sound appropriate. He also mentioned that maintenance had recently removed cameras from inside the guest rooms that the son of Sonia, the owner, had installed. He kept texting us throughout our stay asking to hang out, which we politely declined. Then, around midnight, Jason sent me a photo of his penis with flirtatious texts asking what I thought of the photo. He said he was about 30 years old. My friend and I are freshly 18, so we were very scared for our safety and disgusted by the sexual harassment messages. The next morning, I went to the local authorities and filed a sexual harassment report. We called Sonia, the owner of the Macaw House, who ended up victim‑blaming the situation on me and saying I should never have trusted a “maid” with my number, claiming she had supposedly fired him. I never met Sonia. On the phone she talked over me and barely let me speak. I felt extremely vulnerable, exploited, and scared for our safety. Our parents also called. As soon as we mentioned some compensation (so we could stay somewhere else), she screamed “no refunds,” victim‑blamed, and hung up. They have multiple code violations, including fire and carbon monoxide safety, construction of the “hot tub” (which was not working), and bedbugs. Building code violations can be found at: https://regwatch.nyc/property.
