Maika Beachside homestay

We stayed in one of the two units, both right on the beach front, and a lovely family from the nearby village looked after us, giving us a genuine Fiji experience. The homestay setup meant we didn’t share the family’s home, and the place was tranquil and peaceful, with snorkeling right off the beach. The family cooked all meals, which were excellent in quality; as a gluten‑free guest, I found it easy to avoid gluten, with plenty of fish, chicken, fresh fruit, coconuts, and natural spring water available. Being in our seventies, we found the four‑night stay valuable and very enjoyable, and we recommend it. Unfortunately, I saw plenty of rubbish on our walks and didn’t notice any regular collection service; plastic bottles were a real problem.

With only two rooms at the homestay, we were the sole guests for most of our stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the food—home‑cooked traditional meals—was lovely. Max Jo and the family were very welcoming and kind. There was nothing to dislike, so I would definitely recommend it, just remember that because it’s a homestay there’s no shop for food or drinks if you don’t like the meals.

The rooms were simple but clean (two available), and the hosts were very friendly. The transfer to the ferry worked well, and the food was “original Fiji style” and very tasty, with abundant options such as manta snorkeling. The people were incredibly friendly and loving, letting you get to know them if you want but also giving you space. Island hikes were possible (village, church, school, resort, mountain summit—better guided). One must be aware that this is a homestay, not a resort. Electricity is not unlimited, which should be clear given the location.

The food was delicious, and we loved the home‑cooked meals. The family was very kind, and the location was beautiful, making us feel like we had our own private island. There was no Wi‑Fi, nor any service, and we had to pay in cash; we didn’t know they didn’t accept cards and wish they had stated cash only.
