The lodge sits high up, giving easy access to backcountry and nearby ski runs, so Tsubame Highland Lodge proved a solid base for exploring. John and Helen were very kind and helpful, cooking great meals, offering sake, and fixing car issues, making the visit truly enjoyable. The only downside was that, being an older building, it can feel a bit colder sometimes.

The front‑desk girl was warm and friendly, making us feel welcome. The hot spring water was cold, so during the chilly winter it was almost impossible to soak.

The host and staff were fabulous, with John, Gabriella and James always ready to help. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, and the location offered stunning snowy views plus quick access to several ski slopes. The rooms were spacious, and we liked the lounge for relaxing and card games. The onsen was very relaxing and eased sore muscles after a day on the slopes. The lodge shows its age, but it was clean and comfortable, and I look forward to returning once updates finish.

The staff prepared the wrong room for us; when we arrived we had to rearrange it, ending up in a dirty, untidy room. Hair strands were in the toilet, the window paper had holes, the floor was dusty, the bathroom smelled, and the shower curtain seemed unwashed for a long time. The Coster in the room was close to the bed, causing discomfort and a constant hot wind. The window glass wasn’t vacuum‑sealed, so steam stuck and we couldn’t see the view outside. We booked a room with dinner and breakfast for over 50,000 yen, but received only a very basic set meal with little quantity and bland taste. Our breakfast rice had been left to harden, likely leftover from the night before. The hotel does have an onsen, but the room only had shampoo, hair cream, and body wash; no lotion. They advertised a shared onsen, but it was small enough for one person only; luckily no one was there when we went. Overall, the price paid for the facilities received was not worth it.
