“Comfortable, friendly but a bit basic and remote.”

The staff are friendly and the vibe is relaxed. Transfers to and from Tsugaike Kogan ski resort are convenient, and the skiing itself is awesome. It’s a bit isolated from restaurants and shops, and getting Uber or taxis in Hakuba Valley is tough, especially when the lodge is remote. You’ll need to plan food shopping and meals in advance. The lodge is old and quaint, but we were disappointed to be charged 10,000 Y (cash only) for a lost key because the locks are old and there was no spare key. Room security is also a concern, as we could easily open our locked room with a credit card.

The atmosphere is great and friendly; Shaun and his team were fantastic, helping with pickups and drop‑offs and always ready for a chat. I would recommend them.

I had an amazing stay at Alley Oop. It’s the best hotel I’ve had for traveling with pets! Everyone at the hotel is super friendly and dog‑friendly.

A cozy house set in a beautiful location, with a fantastic shared space that’s perfect for relaxing and spending time together. The atmosphere really makes you slow down and enjoy the moment. Special thanks to host Sean and the staff for the warm welcome and wonderful hospitality. In the duplex apartment, the mezzanine area is cooler than the lower level, which might be an issue for those who prefer warmer temperatures.

“Sean and the staff make alley oop a great place”

The room at Alley Oop was cozy and quiet, with a charming old‑school vibe. Some facilities still need updating, but the new owners, Sean and his team, are friendly and make you feel at home. As a western traveler with a little one, the shared shower wasn’t ideal, but I’m sure they’ll add more western‑style options soon. The place is very secluded, so having a car or other transport is essential.
