This is my eighth stay at Au Tonnelier, which shows I really like and trust the hotel to meet my expectations. It’s right in the centre of the historic and pretty town of Bergues, a former port and fortified border strong‑point. The hotel is a perfect example of a fast‑disappearing genre of dependable French country‑town hotels. The welcome is warm and helpful, the rooms are clean, well‑furnished and have good hot water for showers, and the restaurant serves high‑quality local produce in traditional dishes. Bergues is a great entry and exit point, 30 min from Dunkirk and under an hour from Calais, and the tunnel means a quieter late‑afternoon crossing can be enjoyed knowing your first night is near at hand. Similarly, arriving tired from a long cross‑country journey the evening before your departure, Au Tonnelier guarantees a calm and comfortable last night and a stress‑free run to the Channel with the rest of the day to make it home. And the clincher? All this comes at a most reasonable cost. Well done Au Tonnelier, and thank‑you once again. Nothing to add.
