“A very nice little hotel in a great location.”

Having stayed at the Royal Oak three times, I know exactly what to expect. I appreciate that the rooms are easily reachable—just one flight of stairs and no long corridors to shuffle luggage through—and that it sits right in Helmsley's centre. The downside is the lack of dedicated parking; the spots right outside the door require payment or early departure of the car.

“Don't book a room on a Friday or Saturday unless you are happy to stay up until the music stops.”

The place offers decent beer, food, and rooms. However, the licence actually ends at 1am, not 12am as advertised, and the “noise disturbance” mentioned during booking was so intense it made two bedroom floors vibrate; I measured 77.6 dB in my room.

“Not a good hotel, it's a crash space for partying punters.”

I liked that the place was convenient for booking a one‑night stay in the area; there wasn’t much else to enjoy, but it was fine for a quick night before a long walk. The downside was that music played in the bar below our room until midnight, and live music from 9 pm to 11 pm was loud; the bed was extremely uncomfortable, with individual springs kicking into my back whenever I moved at all during the night.
