“A CLEAN crooked building with SCARY doors”
The room was Spartan, all white except for the floor, but reassuringly clean. There was a small bedside table with a lamp, a clothes rack with hangers, a small kitchen table and two chairs, and a large widescreen TV mounted in the corner that we didn’t use. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the room quiet. A large dorm‑size refrigerator with a separate freezer, an independently controlled AC, a box fan, a space heater, a microwave, and a coffee maker were all present. I left items behind, and a person I was texting at the property phone number helped retrieve them; the cleaning lady left them where we could find them after re‑accessing the building by the doors mentioned in the “what didn’t you like” section. The dining table and chairs felt fragile and creaky. There was no elevator, and the building seemed held together with glue and tape; it was a crooked little place made of at least two adjoining buildings with different floor levels. Long and short staircases and floors that were slightly up or down from the building next door made it a bit of a challenge, though it wasn’t a problem for us. The key lock system was the most important issue: there was no one on duty on the property. You receive an email and text with instructions for a key box or keypad lock system. We got the key box, but using the key to enter the building was difficult. Several groups arrived at the same time; at least three people tried to make the key work in the door repeatedly until one man figured out you had to push the door in before turning the key. We all stood outside banging on the door and calling for help while he figured it out. Then, people who knew their code to access their room didn’t know their room number. Finally, when trying to leave, we encountered the inside of the door we had difficulty accessing upon arrival. We couldn’t get it to open to leave. A new friend we met while trying to access the building the previous afternoon was there ahead of us trying to get out. Between the three of us, we couldn’t get the door to open from the inside. I went through the rabbit warren of the building looking for another way out. From the outside, I went around to the original double doors and unlocked them from the outside, but still couldn’t get the door to open. On the inside, there is a second lock that says, “Do Not Touch.” You know how well that works.
