The food at the Bristowas was good, but the description did not reflect the actual venue—it was too far from town, the bathrooms were down the hall, a cockroach was found at the foot of the stairs, the street was very noisy after the pub closed, and at 1AM I had to ask them to move the party to a different street corner; we couldn't wait to leave, and there was no fridge, no wifi, no water, etc.

“A truly terrible stay”

The staff were friendly, but I really don't like to give bad reviews, especially when the staff are trying their best; I had read some 1‑star reviews and knew what I was getting into with bare‑bones rooms and lack of facilities (no kettle even), yet the reality was worse than I could have imagined, so I need to warn others. When I arrived, the lock on my room was visibly broken; the owner said it was supposed to be fixed but wasn’t, and the door could be closed from the inside only by slamming it loudly, but not from the outside—so I couldn’t leave the room safely with my stuff inside. The owner suggested I exit through a second door that opens onto the middle of the bar’s public balcony; that balcony door has no key and is a lock that can be turned with a butter knife—something the owner showed me. The broken lock will be fixed eventually, but the safety risk on the balcony-facing doors will remain. I didn’t run away because it was late and I had nowhere else to go; another patron was drinking outside on the balcony for most of the night, so I didn’t feel safe leaving through the outside door, and knowing it could be opened with a butter knife by anyone else staying there made for a restless sleep. I didn’t use any facilities that night and was stuck in a room with no windows, no tap, nothing; it was steaming hot with no escape. The TV turned on by itself twice during the night—maybe a universal remote issue, maybe genuinely haunted—your call.

The location was good, the room was clean and tidy, but the bathroom facilities and the communal bathroom were not very clean, which is a big deal for me; extra care is required if choosing a common bathroom area.

“Good location but falls short on basic things”

The spot is great, but the toilets need better upkeep and none of the doors shut, so privacy is tough. Window blinds are broken, security is lacking, and the room key opens any room. There’s no Wi‑Fi in 2026.
