The air felt fresh and the scenery was nice, but the two shipping containers with a lounge kitchen in the middle were a nightmare. The windows and doors were single‑glazed, so it wasn't even cold that night, yet it felt like an icebox. We had a fire, but we didn't expect it to be that chilly for that time of year. The heat pump was in a useless spot: opening the bedroom door sent the heat straight back out, so the two bedrooms—both in the container section—got no warmth, and the metal walls were just painted with no insulation. The beds barely fit, leaving only about 30 cm on one side, and the lamps in one room were so low you had to get out of bed to turn them off. The mattress protector was stained, a huge turn‑off. The lounge tub seats had covers with flaking vinyl underneath; there was hardly any left, and it was clearly overused. Soundproofing was a lie—music from the house made it impossible to hear the TV. The bathroom was a hack‑job that let you see the toilet from outside. The shower over the bath was awkward: vinyl had curled at the bottom, so water ran back into the bath. Gas was connected to a 9 kg bottle. The microwave was so high that we needed a stool to reach it; when we opened the door, the whole unit moved. The red cups needed bleaching. I hate writing bad reviews, but this was a huge let‑down given the gorgeous location. I doubt it would pass any building compliance, but that's my take.

The host was very friendly, the room was clean and hygienic, and it sat in a quiet, separate spot about ten minutes by car from Kaikoura. The only issue was that the foot of the double bed could easily hit your foot—just something to watch out for. Other than that, everything was fine.
