Very quiet, comfortable, and clean. Having the dining area attached was great, the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and communication was good—everything was fine.

The place is basic but spotless and has everything you need, especially the shower – it was the best I've had. The only downside is there are no bedside lights, so you have to get out of bed to use the main light.

Staying here was definitely worth it: the unit is clean, affordable, and well organized. The shower was fantastic, the bed comfy, and the deck is large with a ramp for mobility issues – a thoughtful touch. The surroundings are peaceful with trees, and I even heard bellbirds in the morning. Bikes can be locked securely, and there's plenty of car parking. Across the road is a children's playground, and the accommodation is next to a café that offers a good selection of foods, including all‑day breakfast – we tried the waitbait and loved it. The staff were very friendly, especially Aroha. Bonus: the location sits between Hokitika and Greymouth, and the nearby community of Kumara is charming and great for a stroll afterward. We would definitely return. There was nothing we didn't like – everything was faultless.

The highlight of my stay was the Empire café, where the staff were wonderful and the food excellent. The motel room and bathroom are satisfactory but plain. The shower has great pressure and the bed is comfortable. If you just need the basics, this place will do. Kumara is a magical spot. The downside is there are no windows, pictures, or decorations – the atmosphere feels sterile and lifeless. Don't expect anything beyond the absolute basics; I personally prefer more creative or soulful spaces.
