“Ideal for over night stay”

The Swan sits right next to the train station and even has a large car park, which is a real plus. The staff greeted me warmly and made me feel at home. My room was separate from the main building and, although it wasn’t the biggest, it fit my solo travel needs perfectly. The dinner was tasty and it was nice that food stayed on the menu until 9 pm. In short, a comfortable stay in a convenient spot. I do have a few complaints, though: the rooms look a bit worn and could use some TLC—one light was out, another was taped over, and a curtain was torn. The proximity to the train station also means a level crossing nearby, and the alarm blares whenever a train passes, which can be disruptive, especially from about 6 am. That’s something to keep in mind if you’re a light sleeper.

The staff were very helpful and the food was good, but the stairs to room 2 were too steep for us pensioners.

The location is great, but the ground‑floor room doors need a fresh coat of paint—they look tatty, and there’s nothing to say about The Swan except that the exterior needs a makeover.

“Dirty and badly maintained”

The beds were comfortable, yet this was the dirtiest and worst‑maintained place I’ve ever stayed in. The room hadn’t been cleaned properly for a long time—dust and cobwebs covered every surface, mould appeared in several spots around the bathroom, a broken shower fitting was limescale‑covered, and the carpet had stains. The bathroom bin overflowed with previous occupants’ rubbish, the coffee tray was covered in sugar, and only one large and one tiny towel were provided for two people. The shower height was about 5 ft 5 in. The main building’s hallway carpets were stuck down with yellow and black tape, the outside area was dirty, paint was peeling everywhere, and menus, tables, etc. were sticky and grimy. I could go on…

Breakfast was clean, but the shower ceiling was low and the stairs were steep.
