We stayed at a cozy house on a small estate, a quiet spot with good nearby dining options; it was on the way to Folkestone and back, and the kitchen was usable. The house’s layout was odd, and when we arrived the room hadn’t been cleaned since the last guest, with a clothes rack and dried bedding in the kitchen; after we called, the host apologized and said someone would come. It was 5 pm and we wanted to eat out, so it wasn’t a major hassle. Before we left, Michael, a very pleasant long‑term tenant, arrived and cleaned the room and made the bed. Both times we stayed, the landing light was left on with an extremely bright bulb that shone through a large gap around the door and glass‑fronted wardrobes, reflecting light and disrupting our sleep both nights. The bath mats were not cleaner, and they were the same on our return visit, although the room was clean and tidy that time. The next morning we met another young guy who called himself “the housekeeper”; overall it felt like student accommodation, but both staff were nice, though it might not suit everyone.
