“very good”

Conveniently located near the St Mary’s festival we needed to attend. The surrounding streets aren’t great, but the guest house was well managed and had everything we needed.

I stayed at Villa54, which sits on a quiet, secure street in a pleasant part of Johannesburg, just a quick Uber ride from shops and eateries. Simon, the host, is meticulous about details, and my room featured elegant furnishings and a spacious, impressive bathroom that even impressed visiting friends. I checked out the other rooms, all equally well furnished, and the entire house is bright, comfortable, and stylish. The gardens are spectacular, especially for plant lovers, with many mature indigenous varieties—some rare—carefully maintained. A corner of the garden hosts a relaxing pool, and various birds can be seen and heard. Breakfast is an extra cost but absolutely worth it: the setting is elegant, the service personal, and the food excellent. For dining recommendations, Simon is the go-to; I followed every suggestion and found each spot easy to reach and superb.
