The Super 8 was pretty clean for its brand, but the male manager was snippy, housekeeping entered our room while we were gone even though we had the “do not disturb” sign, and the pool was closed despite promises it would be open multiple times over the phone.

The pool was unavailable, the air outside the door smelled like urine, the town offered almost nothing for food or drinks and the grocery store was depressing and poorly stocked, the microwave never heated water, the floor looked clean but was filthy, and there was absolutely no reason to stay in Yreka unless you’re stuck with car trouble.

The room was spotless, but the so‑called fitness centre turned out to be just a storage room.

The town itself is wonderful, the motel was easy to check in and out of, and the staff were friendly.

The place was tidy and the bathroom got a new granite‑walled shower that looked great; the bed felt a bit firm, but that’s not a big deal.
