We arrived at Okushiga Kogen on April 26 and found the spring snow still on the slopes; the day was a surprising 17 degrees. The hotel sits at the bottom of a lively slope, so you can ski right in. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, the onsen is great, and the food and people are excellent. Everything else was fine.

The staff were very helpful and the food quality was high. The spot feels a bit remote, with few other shops or restaurants nearby.

Having stayed here three times, I know the place well. It’s ideal for skiers or snowboarders, just a short walk from the lifts. The room is roomy and cozy, the bed is very comfortable, and the onsen is beautiful and clean. The two restaurants—Japanese and French—are good, and breakfast is plentiful. I’ll return if I can find a spot, though it’s almost always fully booked during peak season. The snow this year was scarce across Japan, but I found a bit more at Okushiga than in other places I’ve been.

Breakfast and dinner are included, so there’s no hassle. After skiing, I relaxed in the bar/coffee lounge and enjoyed a quiet dinner with wine each night, which made for a perfect holiday. Piano concerts by the fireplace at night and New Year's Eve fireworks added extra charm. It is pricier than other nearby resorts, the dinner menu feels set and somewhat repetitive, and there are no cheaper dining options around.
