The room was spotless, and the staff were charming and extremely helpful, making us feel right at home; the shower was the best I’ve had in ages.

We were missing basic cutlery—no cereal spoons, I think, if I recall correctly—otherwise everything was fine. 👌

The spot wasn’t far from a busy road, but that worked for me because it’s just around the corner from my sister’s place. It’s very close to a small cluster of shops where you can get a doctor, pharmacy, bottle shop, nice café, an old character pub, church, barbers, and a basic Turkish kebab spot that serves the best falafel kebab I’ve ever had. If you ask for room B, you can sit at your little dining table for two and look out at the port hills. At the shops you can catch two buses: the orbiter that circles Christchurch and another that takes you into the CBD in one direction or a shopping mall in the other, both quite close by bus. The room was modern. There was self‑service laundry on site, $4 for a wash using two $2 coins and five dollars for the dryer. I booked the place in a hurry because I was coming for a funeral. I like to cook simple meals when I can, I don’t like eating too much bought food, but there was only one pot. There’s a two‑element cooktop and a microwave, so I could have cooked more if there were more kitchen items. I’ll talk to the owners about this; usually in NZ if you can self‑cater there’s more equipment. I’d have liked a box of tissues and a laundry‑powder dispensing machine. I didn’t have a hire car because my brother and sister were transporting me when they could. The supermarket was a short bus ride away, but you’re limited by how much you can carry back.
