The history is amazing and the building is beautiful; I recommend taking the tour they offer to learn about the ryokan’s history and its connection to Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (Japanese only). There isn’t much to do nearby except enjoy the hotel, though a great blue reservoir is close by. If you enjoy a long walk, this place offers great views. The suite was pure Japanese luxury, and the kaiseki dinner served in the room was delicious. A Smart TV in the room is great for non‑Japanese speakers to unwind during the day. There isn’t much else to do besides bothering the ryokan, which is expected. The tour is Japanese only, and tattoos are covered in the shared bath.

The room and the food. Even though I stayed at Kayashimotei, I didn’t enter through its entrance; I had to carry heavy luggage myself from the main building, climb stairs, pass a tunnel with an unpleasant smell, and finally take the elevator to reach the front desk.

The best ryokan we have ever stayed at.

The lighting at Sekizenkan was absolutely stunning, and the warm hot spring water felt great on my skin. Dining outside the bridge at Sekizenya was a healing experience, especially the pumpkin soup with masala chai. I’d give it a perfect 10/10 and plan to come back, though I had to leave sooner than I’d liked.
