“Good”
The staff were friendly, the location was good with a bus stop right outside for the Ambleside bus, and the food was great, but the shower couldn't be set to a usable temperature.

The place was great, very comfortable, I loved the hotel, the location was excellent, and the steak we had was unreal – we’ll definitely come back.

A nice young man brought my bed into the room and welcomed us; the windows offered a lovely view, the room was warm and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was excellent, evening meals were very good and plentiful, and the old hotel is charming and I’d love to return. The Talbot bar lacked atmosphere, was cold with no fire, and the common areas could use a deeper clean given the number of dogs around.

From check‑in to check‑out everything was seamless; a warm welcome greeted me upon arrival, and the breakfast was amazing—opening the door to room 12 gave me a real wow moment. I skipped dinner because I was on a walking group, and the hotel’s location is ideal for multi‑centre walks, sitting right in the middle of Ambleside, Grasmere and Coniston. The drying room was superb, especially with the wet weather, and my gear dried overnight. The only downside was the bathroom: it’s huge and I liked the bath after walking, but there was no hand rail to help me get in and out. That’s the only issue, and I’ve stayed here twice already and still enjoy it.
