It’s close to town, but I ended up on an upstairs room even though I didn’t ask for a downstairs one while traveling with my 80‑plus mum.

Outside the room there was a strong mix of cigarette smoke and dampness that made the air pretty unpleasant.

I stayed there for one night and it was perfect; I arrived late after check‑in had closed, yet the staff called me to explain how to get into my room, which was warm and cosy on a cold winter night, spotless, and very quiet. A terrific bakery called Batter n Dough is only a two‑minute walk away, and their lemon and poppyseed muffins are spectacular.
