The accommodation itself is very pretty, with the huts perched on the mountain offering great views, and they’re well‑made and modern. Unfortunately, the game drives were terrible, which is a major disappointment for a private game reserve booking. During our tour of six different private reserves in April/May 2026, none had game drives as bad as at Zulu Rock Lodge. We practically saw nothing—just two zebras, two rhinos, and a small group of impalas. I didn’t even count the one elephant that the guide barely spotted with the binoculars. The area is still fairly new, but if you see almost nothing, it’s just too few animals there. The drive also takes forever through very tall grass, where you see nothing. The paths are so uneven with all the rock outcrops that you have to hold on tight all the time to avoid falling from the car. Overall, a huge letdown.

Food was excellent, view was great, facilities and lodges very good, staff friendly and helpful. For a Big 5 game reserve it felt a bit unlikely to see anything very significant (ie a bit understocked for 22000 hectares). Steep rocky slopes make for great atmosphere but slow bumpy progress
