Housed in two historic buildings—Herberget (1780s) and Brenneriet (1880s)—the hotel offers double, twin, and luxury suites furnished with antiques and period pieces, each with private bathrooms and complimentary toiletries. We enjoyed a good breakfast and clean rooms, but we had ordered a shower and balcony double booking, so we ended up with a room without a balcony and with a bathtub, which is problematic for us with bad knees and getting in and out. The person responsible for the double booking, not the hotel, was informed. When the name says fjordhotel, one expects to see a glimpse of the fjord, but there was only forest.

The location and history were good, but the staff barely met us when we arrived and we received no information about the place or our stay. We thought the garden was included for guests, but we apparently had to pay for it, along with other things to see and experience on site, which is bad given how expensive the stay is.

It was pretty good… but the location, parking fee out in the woods, dull and expensive restaurant, and still a sadder breakfast. Really nothing special. Pick something else!

The local architecture and details were fantastic, the garden layout with Munch’s villa was outstanding, and the life work of Petter Olsen was impressive and moving. The egg dish was super – with bits of cheese – among the best I’ve tasted. However, when I arrived at 22:00 the reception was closed, I had never been there before, and it took an “infinite” amount of time to get in touch with the front desk.
