Cha Am

A straightforward weekend coastal escape for seafood and sand.

introduction

Overview

Cha Am is a relaxed seaside town on the Gulf of Thailand, 170 kilometers south of Bangkok. The town centers on a wide, five-kilometer beach lined with pine trees and Ruamjit Road. You move between the seafood pier in the north, the active beach strip in the center, and the quiet town center west of Phetkasem Road.

Arrival from highway

Minibuses drop off along Phetkasem Road. Hire an orange-vested motorcycle taxi to reach beach hotels for 40-60 THB.

Royal teak architecture

Mrigadayavan Palace sits on 1,080 teak stilts. The elevated layout captures ocean breezes to cool the residence.

Seafood purchasing

Buy fresh crab at Ban Khlong Cha-Am pier at 11:00 when trawlers return. Prices are 30% lower than southern beachfronts.

food

Seafood at the pier and oceanfront stalls

Cha Am relies on local seafood rather than imported tourist menus. Blue swimmer crab and grilled squid dominate local tables. Dining concentrates in two spots: the working pier at the north end of town and the open-air stalls lining Ruamjit Road.

  • Eat crab at North Pier

Head to Ban Khlong Cha-Am pier around 11:00. Fishing trawlers unload directly to pier stalls where crabs are weighed and steamed to order.

Restaurants along central Ruamjit Road charge higher prices for smaller portions. Walk 10 minutes north to get lower rates and fresher catch.

  • Bring cash for seafood stalls

Pier vendors and night market cooks do not take credit cards. Keep small Thai Baht notes for meal orders.

history

A short history

Cha Am originated as a quiet fishing settlement named Ban Cha-Am. In 1923, King Rama VI commissioned the construction of Mrigadayavan Palace along its coast, transforming the area into a retreat for Thai royalty and elite families. Unlike neighboring Hua Hin, Cha Am preserved its agricultural and fishing roots, evolving into a preferred holiday spot for domestic weekenders from Bangkok.

    Domestic tourism boom

Phetkasem Highway improvements make Cha Am the primary weekend escape for Bangkok residents.
