Chittagong is an estuarine river port situated along the Karnaphuli River, historically requiring tidal management and dredging due to draft limitations, which served as a key Bay of Bengal trading node for two millennia. Arab merchants introduced Islam in the 9th century, leaving linguistic and culinary traces. Control shifted between Arakanese, Bengali Sultanates, and Portuguese traders before Mughal forces seized the fort in 1666.
