Heraklio originated as the harbour for Minoan Knossos four millennia ago. Arab forces fortified the town in the 9th century, naming it Chandax. Venetian rulers later transformed it into Candia, constructing massive stone ramparts that withstood a 21-year siege.Modern Heraklio was largely rebuilt after World War II damage. Concrete mid-rise buildings now encircle Venetian monuments and Byzantine chapels.
