A short history
Kaohsiung grew from a coastal indigenous trading post called Takao into Taiwan's main shipping hub. Japanese colonial planners developed its deepwater harbour and grid street layout in the early 20th century. Post-war industrial growth turned the city into a heavy manufacturing centre before recent urban initiatives reclaimed docklands for arts and rail transit.
