food

Flores seafood and harbor dining

Dining in Labuan Bajo revolves around fresh sea catch brought directly to the waterfront docks. Grilled snapper, grouper, and squid cooked over open coal fires dominate local evening meals. Traditional Manggarai dishes use cassava, corn, and fish broths with minimal spices.

practicalities

Good to know

  • ATM availability

ATMs line Jalan Soekarno Hatta, but machines run out of cash on busy weekends.

  • Sun protection

Equatorial sun on open wooden boats causes fast burns. Bring coral-safe sunscreen.

  • Strong currents

Archipelago currents are severe. Snorkel only where dive guides advise.

  • Ranger rule

Never enter dragon areas without an official park ranger carrying a wooden fork staff.

  • Boat payments

Pay tour operators in cash or complete bank transfers before departure.
