A short history
Founded in 1811 as Cannonsburgh, the city renamed itself Murfreesboro after Revolutionary War officer Hardy Murfree. It served as Tennessee's state capital from 1818 until 1826, when political power shifted west to Nashville. In December 1862, the Battle of Stones River produced one of the Civil War's highest casualty rates and secured Union control over Middle Tennessee. Middle Tennessee State Normal School opened in 1911, transforming the agricultural hub into an education center.
