Mussoorie

Ridge walks, colonial detours, and Garhwal mountain air.

introduction

Overview

Mussoorie clings to a curved ridge in the Garhwal Himalayas above Dehradun. The town splits into dense commercial strips around Mall Road and tranquil pine woods up in Landour. You move along footpaths and narrow ridge roads where cars pay steep entry fees and often stall in peak gridlock. High season brings heavy crowds, but early mornings reveal clear views across the Doon Valley.

Arrival trick

Take the morning Shatabdi train from Delhi to Dehradun, then switch to a local taxi at the station. This avoids the unpredictable mountain bus schedule.

Winter line phenomenon

Mussoorie is one of few places in Asia where the winter line horizon occurs every year from October to January. Look south at sunset for a sharp second horizon.

food

Garhwali staples and colonial bakeries

Food in Mussoorie splits between Tibetan momo stalls, Garhwali hill cuisine, and British-era bakeries. Char Dukan in Landour serves famous ginger tea and cinnamon waffles to morning walkers. For authentic mountain fare, look for spots serving *phaanu* (ground lentil stew) and *kandali saag* (stinging nettle greens).

history

A short history

Mussoorie developed in 1823 as a British hill station when military officer Frederick Young built a shooting lodge on the ridge. Unlike Shimla, Mussoorie remained an unofficial summer retreat without formal government status, earning a reputation for uninhibited social life. The exile of the 14th Dalai Lama to Mussoorie in 1959 established a vibrant Tibetan community before his move to Dharamshala.
