Overview
Pak Chong sits at the base of the Sankamphaeng Range, two hours northeast of Bangkok. It acts as the primary transit town for Khao Yai National Park and the surrounding agricultural valley. You move between rural food markets in town and resort-lined mountain roads by songthaew or rented car. Expect cooler evening temperatures than the central plains, but heavy weekend road congestion from Bangkok travelers.
Arrival by rail
Trains from Bangkok arrive directly at Pak Chong station. Third-class tickets cost under 50 THB, but delays of an hour or more are common.
First national park
Khao Yai became Thailand's first national park in 1962. It forms part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai UNESCO World Heritage forest complex.
Park entry mechanics
Foreign park entry costs 400 THB per adult. Keep your paper ticket accessible because rangers check it at internal checkpoints.

Pak Chong sits at the geographic entry to Isan, Thailand's northeastern region. Local food centers on sticky rice, grilled meats, and intensely spiced papaya salads. The area's mid-century cattle ranching history also created a local steakhouse tradition along Highway 2. You will find dry-aged beef served alongside Isan jaew dipping sauces in town side alleys.

Order som tam Korat at town stalls. It combines fermented fish sauce and dried shrimp, distinct from standard Bangkok papaya salad.

Resort strip restaurants around Mu Si close their kitchens early. Plan to order dinner before 20:00 outside central Pak Chong town.

A short history
Pak Chong grew from a dense jungle pass into a critical transit node connecting Bangkok to the Isan plateau. The construction of the northeastern railway at the end of the 19th century opened the terrain. Later, highway developments during the mid-20th century transformed the surrounding valley into an agricultural hub for cattle ranching and produce.

Public transit inside Pak Chong district is limited to town routes and park-bound songthaews. Renting a vehicle or hiring a day driver offers total control over your schedule.

- Wild animal safety
Wild elephants frequently walk along park roads at dusk. Keep a 50-meter distance and never honk your horn.
- Leech protection
If hiking trails after rain, buy leech socks at the visitor center for 100 THB before heading into forest tracks.
- Park gate timing
Khao Yai gates open strictly from 06:00 to 18:00. Night safari drives must be booked through official rangers.
- Cash requirement
Park entry gates and songthaew drivers accept cash only. ATMs are sparse along rural stretches of Thanarat Road.
- Weekend traffic jams
Traffic entering Pak Chong from Highway 2 backs up heavily on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
