Overview
Santorini is a flooded volcanic caldera surrounded by steep ash cliffs. Main towns cling to the western rim, while volcanic black beaches line the flat eastern shore. Central KTEL buses run through Fira, making it the primary transit link for getting around the island.

Minoan preservation at Akrotiri

A short history
Santorini was shaped by violent volcanic activity. The Minoan eruption shattered a single large island into the crescent-shaped ring seen today. Subsequent Venetian and Ottoman rulers fortified hilltop villages before mid-20th-century tourism transformed the island.
