history
A short history
The Helderberg basin was inhabited by indigenous Khoikhoi pastoralists before European settlement. In 1685, Governor Simon van der Stel surveyed the valley, leading to agricultural land grants along the Lourens River. The town was originally named Somerset in 1819 after Governor Lord Charles Somerset, and was renamed Somerset West in 1825 to distinguish it from Somerset East.
