A short history
St Petersburg developed rapidly following the arrival of the Orange Belt Railway in 1888. Russian immigrant Peter Demens named the town after his birthplace. In 1914, the world's first scheduled commercial airline flight crossed Tampa Bay from St Petersburg to Tampa, establishing early aviation history.For decades, the city catered primarily to retirees, earning a reputation as a quiet haven. A concerted urban renewal project in the late 1990s shifted investments toward arts institutions, downtown housing, and green spaces along the shoreline.
