Tallahassee

Florida's government and college hub under live oak canopies.

introduction

Overview

Tallahassee moves between state government and university life. The city sits on rolling hills covered in live oaks, far removed from Florida's coastal resort strips. You navigate it by car, pivoting between legislative office blocks, two major campuses, and historic oak-lined avenues.

Capitol observation deck

Take the elevator to the 22nd floor of the New Capitol building. Access is free and gives clear views across the tree canopy.

Legislative session spikes

Lawmakers convene for 60 days starting each January or March. Hotel prices double downtown and dinner reservations book out.

food

Smoked sausage, fresh grouper, and Capitol lunches

Tallahassee food balances North Florida agricultural roots with coastal seafood and university casual spots. Country sausage from regional smokehouses appears on breakfast plates across the county. Lunch in the city core caters heavily to state workers seeking quick southern meat-and-threes or deli sandwiches.Fresh seafood arrives daily from Gulf ports like Panacea, located under an hour south, and Apalachicola, which takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach by car. Fried grouper sandwiches, raw oysters, and shrimp po'boys are local staples rather than tourist novelties. Dinner shifts northward to Midtown for upscale Southern cooking incorporating local pecans and tupelo honey.

history

A short history

Long before European settlement, the Apalachee nation cultivated fertile soil in this red-clay region. Tallahassee takes its name from a Muscogee (Creek) word meaning 'old town' or 'abandoned field'. In 1824, territorial leaders selected the location as Florida's capital because it sat midway between the established cities of St. Augustine and Pensacola.

    Mission San Luis founded

Spanish Franciscan friars and Apalachee leaders established Mission San Luis as the provincial capital of western Florida.

  2. 1824

    Capital designation

Commissioners met on horseback to pick a central capital, founding Tallahassee between St. Augustine and Pensacola.

  3. 1977

    New Capitol completion

The 22-story executive tower opened directly behind the 1845 historic capital building, preserving the old structure.
