Tempe

A desert college town defined by heat, tech, and ASU.

introduction

Overview

Tempe sits directly east of Phoenix Sky Harbor airport, built around Arizona State University and Tempe Town Lake. Heat dictates daily schedules for half the year, pushing exercise to sunrise and social life to nightfall. You move between red-brick storefronts on Mill Avenue and concrete tech headquarters along the water. Light rail connects you to central Phoenix and Mesa without requiring a rental car for short stays.

Arrival trick

The PHX Sky Train links terminals to Valley Metro Rail. A $2 single ride lands you on Mill Avenue in 12 minutes.

Architecture mark

ASU Gammage is the last public building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Construction finished in 1964.

Heat survival rule

Summer temperatures exceed 100°F (38°C) daily. Plan outdoor hikes before 8:00 AM and carry one liter of water per hour.

food

Sonoran flavours and college staples

Tempe dining balances student budgets with Sonoran Desert influences. Sonoran hot dogs—bacon-wrapped and served in steamy bolillo rolls—anchor late-night food trucks along Apache Boulevard. Craft breweries along Mill Avenue double as full-service kitchens serving mesquite-smoked meats. High-end dining lives mostly in hotel towers or across the border in Scottsdale.

  • Patio dining timing

Misting systems make outdoor summer dining manageable until noon, but indoor air conditioning wins by 1:00 PM.

  • Academic lunch rush

Campus-adjacent spots peak between 11:45 AM and 1:15 PM. Eat early or wait until 2:00 PM to avoid long counter queues.

  • Card-only venues

Most food halls and sports bars near ASU do not accept cash. Carry a credit or debit card everywhere.

history

A short history

Long before European settlement, the Hohokam people engineered extensive irrigation canals throughout the Salt River Valley. Charles Trumbull Hayden first visited the area in 1870 and established the ferry and flour mill in 1870–1871, founding Hayden's Ferry. The settlement renamed itself Tempe in 1879, comparing the valley to the Vale of Tempe in Greece. The establishment of the Territorial Normal School in 1885 laid the groundwork for modern Arizona State University.

transport

Getting around

Tempe possesses the best public transit network in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Valley Metro Rail bisects the city from east to west, while the Tempe Streetcar loops through downtown and the ASU campus. The FLASH shuttle is no longer in service, having been replaced by the Tempe Streetcar and local bus routes. Renting a car is unnecessary if your activities stay within Tempe, but essential for trips to Scottsdale or the Grand Canyon.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Dehydration warning

  • No Daylight Saving

Arizona remains on Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) year-round. Time zone differences relative to California change in March.

  • Game day congestion

When ASU plays home football games at Mountain America Stadium, avoid driving near Veterans Way.

  • Flash floods in desert

Monsoon rains in July and August cause quick street flooding. Never drive through standing water in low-lying washes.
