Whistler

Whistler is a purpose-built resort town in British Columbia's Coast Mountains, connected by a vehicle-free Village Stroll. Two giant mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, anchor the valley and connect high-alpine mountain lodges via a record-spanning gondola. Whistler dining focuses on high-energy recovery food and high-end Pacific Northwest seafood. High mountain logistics mean menu prices run steep across all tiers. Reservations for dinner are mandatory during peak ski months and mid-summer weekends.

Long before alpine ski lifts were built, the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations shared the valley for hunting and gathering. European settlers established fishing lodges in the early 20th century. The area was developed as a ski resort in the 1960s with hopes of hosting the 1968 Winter Olympics.

1. 1966

   Whistler Mountain Opens

   Whistler Mountain opens for skiing under the original name London Mountain, serviced by a single gondola and red chairlift.

2. 1980

   Blackcomb Mountain & Village

   Blackcomb Mountain opens as a rival resort, and the municipality opens the newly designed, pedestrian-only Whistler Village.

3. 1997

   Resort Merger

   Intrawest merges Whistler and Blackcomb, uniting the two competing mountains under one operating umbrella.

4. 2010

   Winter Olympic Games

   Whistler co-hosts the XXI Olympic Winter Games, adding modern infrastructure and the Sea to Sky Highway expansion.

Choose your base by lift access and night noise. Whistler Village places you steps from both mountain gondolas but comes with evening noise. Upper Village offers quieter mountain access, while Creekside suits travelers seeking a slower residential feel.
