Yamanouchi

Yamanouchi sits in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, built around hot springs and high peaks. You move between its valley villages on the Nagano Electric Railway and local feeder buses. Expect sulfur-scented streets, steep winter ski runs, and wild monkeys soaking in volcanic pools.

Yamanouchi relies on Nagano buckwheat and high-altitude mountain produce. Cold spring water gives local Shinshu soba its firm texture. Evening meals at traditional ryokan feature local river trout, often skewered and salt-grilled over charcoal.

The Nagano Electric Railway terminates at Yudanaka Station. From Yudanaka, Nagaden local buses connect you to Shibu Onsen, Kanbayashi, and the high slopes of Shiga Kogen.
