“A secret gem.”
I can’t think of a reason anyone would rate this below ten unless they expected a sterile hotel. This place has more character and historic charm than any other Japanese spot I’ve visited. It isn’t a hotel or a generic spa; it’s a singular, proud, quirky, creaky, beautiful, mysterious place. We were the only guests the first night, and I felt like I’d crossed the bridge in “Spirited Away.” There are tunnels and pathways inside, and the views were spectacular. The baths, with whispering bamboo and absolute silence, were stunning. The service was out of this world. I’ve stayed at many ryokans, but the level of care, proud hospitality, sweet smiles, and the food—most delicious, generous, indigenous, creative—were unmatched. If you’re a Hyatt fan or a White Lotus spa type, skip it. But if you want a secret slice of real Japan with the best hospitality and food you’ll never find elsewhere, this is the place.
