Located within a private concession in the Kruger National Park, Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge features 5-star luxury suites resembling beehives, with circular timber decks offering views of the waterhole and surrounding plains. Each air-conditioned rondavel suite has a private deck and stone bathtub, surrounded by earthy colours and locally-sourced fabrics.

I had an unforgettable stay where the staff were kind, welcoming, knowledgeable and delivered 5‑star service, never turning down a request. The food was amazing, with a wide variety and beautiful presentation. Our guide, Suitboy, was exceptional—he worked hard to ensure we saw everything we wanted, including the big 5, and shared his deep animal knowledge while welcoming our questions. He also supplied drinks, blankets, snacks and hot water bottles on cold safari days. We stayed 4 nights, covering 3 full days of safari and 7 game drives—exactly the right amount. On our departure day, our early flight was helped by staff who packed breakfast for the road. We met many friendly people and felt grateful to experience our first safari at Hoyo Hoyo.

The lodge is stunning and fully immersed in the savannah, with extraordinary and personalized welcome. The staff truly go the extra mile, making us feel like privileged friends. The cuisine is excellent. The safari guide is very professional and friendly. The room was beautiful but a bit small and lacked an interior shower (only an outdoor shower and an indoor bathtub). The pool wasn’t very clear and the sun loungers were a bit worn. We expected better for such a high price. We were also a bit disappointed with the safaris because we didn’t see many animals, but that’s just how safaris go and luck isn’t always on your side.

The ranger tried to track down the leopard—the only big‑5 we hadn’t seen—but we never spotted it, although we did see lions and wild dogs. For the price we paid the whole experience fell short; after several days in Kruger we chose this lodge to end our trip on a high note, yet we left disappointed. Staff were rather rude, constantly reminding us we should have stayed at least three nights, a pressure echoed by the manager and which made us feel like second‑class guests for only booking one night. The food was acceptable but unremarkable, the room was decent, and the safaris were the other let‑down. Despite our awareness that spotting free‑roaming animals is tough, the two full‑day safaris (dawn and dusk) yielded very few interesting sightings; we left without seeing a leopard, only a few lions and wild dogs, which was surprising given that two novices like us managed better outings elsewhere. In our view, there are superior ways to experience Kruger.
