The staff were polite enough to explain that they hadn’t received our confirmation even though we’d booked and paid long before. They left us and my family without accommodation during the busy Ooty holiday season.

Fernhills Royal Palace is a charming old building on its own grounds, a bit away from town centre, with lovely staff and decent food. The lack of heating made the room and restaurant chilly at night; they did offer a fan heater and hot water bottles, but we still felt cold, especially in the bathroom.

The place feels like a real step back in time, steeped in the history of a lost era. It just doesn’t have much energy or life, and its sheer size makes it hard to imagine it being lively.
