The property was excellent, except for a small leak near the toilet; that was the only problem. The room and the whole place were amazing.

Thornbury Castle - A Relais & Chateaux Hotel, a Tudor castle near the Cotswolds and Welsh Borders, resonates with history as the only Tudor Castle in England to be opened as a hotel. This Relais & Chateaux hotel features atmospheric bedchambers, a three AA Rosette restaurant, free broadband, roaring fires, and historic features like suits of armour, along with on-site croquet and archery facilities.

The room was spotless, the shower was huge, and the bed was super comfy; the food was delicious, and there was nothing else to complain about.

We booked the Jane Seymour suite at Thornbury Castle and it was gorgeous, complete with excellent amenities, and the lounge and library were perfect for drinks; the 3‑course menu was spot‑on and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately, our arrival was rough: the front desk lady started off okay but quickly became snippy when we asked questions, and she even helped me lug my heavy suitcase up to the suite. Because it was the last day of a two‑week trip we only had one bill, so we couldn’t tip her right away. Later we brought the car back in to ask for change, but she wouldn’t even look at us or speak to us. Another receptionist had to explain that the hotel is a no‑cash place and we’d need to go to a town post office for change. I just wanted to tip the lady who’d helped us earlier, but she gave me a disgusted look and ignored us. We spent hours trying to figure out why she’d been so rude—maybe she disliked our nationality, maybe she didn’t like people asking questions, or maybe she’d been short‑changed on a tip. I couldn’t tell, so we decided not to let it ruin the rest of our stay. The only other snag was the bathroom in our room: the shower didn’t drain properly and water spilled over the lip, so we had to use all our towels to keep the floor dry. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it was annoying. We arrived on Thursday, 8 October, around 3 pm, and the receptionist was a dark‑haired woman who definitely didn’t give the best first impression for a place as wonderful as Thornbury Castle.
