The family room was comfortable and quiet. Plenty of on‑site parking. Good food and drink. Friendly staff. Because we had older children, the triple bunk bed was less than ideal and the mattresses were too thin. This was fixed by having one child sleep on the sofa bed. I would have liked 100 % cotton bedding too.

The location was perfect for us since we were hiking from Bath to Salisbury along a route that passed through Heytesbury. We booked a twin room, and it was a bonus to find a shower and a bath (for soaking tired muscles!). Our dinner was the kind of food I might cook at home (lasagne, a very British take on chicken curry) and breakfast was full English with variations. The lady who owns the pub is lovely, as are all the staff – and the equally friendly locals! Nothing was too much trouble and we felt very welcome. The room itself (a twin) was on the small side and we both longed for a collapsible armchair, but that was reflected in the good value of the room. I could see other double rooms as some doors were open as I passed, and they looked more spacious. This is a straightforward Inn rather than a boutique hotel, and as long as you know that when you book, you can’t go wrong with the Red Lion :-)

The staff were lovely and helpful, and the food was great; the facilities were fantastic, though the bathroom lighting and the night‑time reading light were lacking.
