The cocktail bar waiter was the only bright spot, but overall the experience was a huge let‑down for a place of this caliber. We booked the Château de Berne for a weekend with friends from Switzerland, hoping to enjoy the venue, yet the reality fell far short of the price and prestige. On Saturday we were told the hotel was privatized, so we couldn’t dine normally at the restaurant. After lengthy talks, we ended up in a cramped space that was ill‑suited for food service: the service was disappointing, the coffee came out cold, a Chartreuse order was mixed up, and no compensation was offered on the bill. At 15:00 we discovered our “Deluxe” room had been charged 524 €, with a bed presented as queen‑size but measuring only about 140 cm. Despite pointing this out and asking for a measurement, we were told it was indeed a queen‑size. After persisting, we finally received a different room that matched our reservation better, though the air‑conditioning was loud and ineffective. The only real highlight was the Mauritian waiter who took care of us at the pre‑dinner reception, very friendly and professional. The evening at the Michelin‑starred restaurant was another disappointment: the chosen wine was no longer available, the replacement was not enjoyed by any of the six diners, and the meal itself was poorly received—none of us liked the dishes, and two fish were overly salty. Those two were removed from the bill, which still hovered around 1 000 €. The next morning, a table for six had been booked for us at 9 h, yet it had been assigned to other guests; we ended up seated at a table originally meant for four.
